The Center is an academic support service offering individual assistance for all MMC students. We offer coaching in writing and mathematics, and in most other academic subjects. The FREE one-on-one support for students is a unique quality of our service.

Coaching is available on a walk-in or by-appointment basis

Who's Who…
in the Center for Academic Advancement



Dawn An coaches students in writing. She holds a B.A. in English with a minor in Comparative Literature from Queens College, and has completed courses in composition and rhetoric at the CUNY Graduate Center. She especially loves to coach students in poetry.

"Living things prefer to go on living." -Dawn An quoting from Wendy Law-Yone's novel, The Coffin Tree. This is the first and last sentence in the book.

Carol Berman is one of the Center's volunteer writing coaches. Carol is a retired writing and grammar teacher with over 20 years of experience.

Mary Elizabeth Dee holds a Masters degree from Stony Brook University and wears many hats as a math instructor and math coach, and has been intimately involved in Marymount Manhattan College's HEOP program.

Elsa Franco earned her M.A. in Liberal Studies and B.A. in English at CUNY CSI and Fordham University, respectively. She coaches in subject areas of Spanish, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Art History, History, Literature and Writing. Elsa also serves CAA as an instructor for Effective Thinking, CS100 and Composition CS097 & CS099 courses. Additionally, Elsa instructed the GRE Verbal Test Prep course offered by CAA last spring.

Harold Ingram joined the Marymount coaching center last fall. His specialty is writing and grammar. Harold is one of the few people around that LOVES grammar. We've never scene anything like it, frankly. Harold has a M.A. in Philosophy from New York University.

Connie Madden works as a writing coach and is especially skilled in coaching students for whom English is a second language. Connie is a proud, summa cum laude alumnae of Marymount Manhattan College. She earned her B.A. in English and holds a Masters in TESOL. She is also highly skilled in helping students work their way through assignments in Sociology, Art History, and Literature.

Yogesh Master coaches Algebra, Calculus and Statistics. Yogesh has a B.A. in Mathematics and a M.A. in Statistics. You may have encountered him in Math 109, as he is an instructor for this course as well.

Gerry Mandora has a master degree in Operations Research from Columbia University Engineering. He coaches all levels of math and has served as an instructor for the LSAT Prep courses offered by CAA.

Abu Mohammed enjoys coaching students in all levels of math, business skills, economics, and finance. Last spring, Abu initiated the Marymount book drive to begin a library in Darfur. Abu and his friends are taking on the responsibility of shipping the books to Sudan. The book drive for the Darfur library will continue through the fall 2008 semester, so donate your books now!!!

Asha Persad holds a B.A. in Political Science from Hunter College and a M.A. in Biology from Long Island University. She coaches in Biology.

Tina Peabody graduated summa cum laude from Marymount Manhattan College in 2008 with a bachelor degree in English and a minor in History. She has coached math in the Center fro Academic Advancement for the past 3 years. Her special coaching interests are in quantitative reasoning and pre-calculus.

Courtney Collins is a proud graduate of Marymount Manhattan College. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and will complete her M.S. in Psychology at Pace University this Fall. She coaches in the Center in the areas of math, statistics, SPSS and of course, psychology.

Shalva Tsiklauri holds a M.S. in Theoretical Physics and a Ph.D. in Nuclear and Particle Physics. Shalva coaches advanced courses in math as well as physics.

Gina Tomasulo is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. Program in Comparative Literature at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Gina's interests include French, Italian, American and African American literature; Gender Studies and Postcolonial Studies; Narratology; Psychoanalysis.

Monica Duchnowski holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Aside from teaching Introduction to Writing at Marymount Manhattan, she coaches on a variety of subjects in the Center, including French and Italian!

Bansari Mitra is an experienced educator with a Ph.D. in English. Her most recent publication is a book titled, The Renovation of Folktales, 2002. She is currently working on Images of African, Caribbean, Indian and Near Eastern Colonies in 19th and 20th Century British Novels. Dr. Mitra is a welcomed addition this fall to the coaching staff of CAA.
