Honors Day 2008

Honors Day and the 31st Annual Honors Colloquium at Marymount Manhattan took place on March 11, 2008. Honors Day recognizes and encourages the outstanding scholarship and achievements of students and faculty at the College.

The Honors Day program featured an opening ceremony hosted by the Student Government Association in the Theresa Lang Theatre. SGA president Patrick Madigan and vice president Jason Buffer shared opening remarks. Teaching Recognition Awards recognized adjunct professors of the various academic departments and divisions. Katie Langan, chair of the Department of Dance, awarded Elena Comendador. Dr. Peter Naccarato, chair of the Division of Humanities, awarded Professor Helen Pfeffer. Dr. Eileen Tynan, chair of the Division of Business Management, Professor Surinder Sing. Dr. Kenton Worcester, chair of the Division of Social Sciences, awarded Dr. Chris Toulouse. Dr. Ann Jablon, chair of the Division of Natural Sciences, awarded John Lopez.

Dr. Marguerita Grecco, acting dean for academic affairs, presented the excellence in teaching award to Sue Behrens, associate professor of communication sciences and disorders. Dr. Grecco also presented the dean's awards for excellence to Matthew Pittsinger for his project, "Microcredit in Bangladesh: a Critique of Lending Policies and Ideology of Graneer Bank," sponsored by Dr. Radhika Blakrishnan, professor of economics and international studies. Students Brittany Bellgardt and Dana Grunklee received honorable mention. Olivia Warren received the Writ I award and Sara Bauknecht received the Writ II award.

Dean Peter Baker, vice president for institutional research and planning, recognized and congratulated the honors colloquium presenters. Student and Alpha Chi president Meghan MacAlpine presented Alice York with the Alpha Chi Award for her project, "Dramaturgy Work for MMC eater Production Workshop: Camille," sponsored by Dr. Elizabeth Swain, professor of theatre arts.

Throughout the day, MMC students were inducted into various honor's societies, including: Alpha Chi, Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership), Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science), Kappa Delta Pi (Education), Alpha Sigma Delta (Advertising), Lambda Pi Eta (Communication), Sigma Beta Delta (Business, Management, and Administration). Students also presented their honor's projects and papers throughout the day. During his greeting, President Judson R. Shaver said, "Today is a day to pause and celebrate the best teaching, the best scholarship as well as notable examples of learning."

MMC Dance Student Jenna Liberati, presented a dance performance entitled, "Standing on a Platform Yesterday or Today," in Great Hall. The performance featured other dance students, who answered questions from audience members.
