Guest and Visitation Policy

Students are responsible for their guest behavior when on college property or attending any college sponsored events. Any guest in violation of college policy, will be asked to leave college property immediately and judicial procedures will be filed against the student. Residents are responsible for all activities that occur within their room.
The residence hall policies and procedures related to guests and visitors exist to allow residents to have guests in a manner that does not infringe upon the comfort or rights of other residents and maintains an appropriate level of safety and security in the building.
Regardless of the length of stay, the guest is expected to abide by all College and Residence Life policies, procedures, regulations, and standards. The host is responsible for the actions of his/her guests at all times. Any guest who violates any departmental or College policy while in student housing or other areas is subject to State of New York penalties and will be asked to leave the residence hall.
There may be certain times of the year, such as the beginning of the fall semester, semester breaks and exam periods, when the guest and/or visitation policy may be restricted or modified. Residence Life Staff reserve the right to override permission for an overnight guest and deny that individual the privilege of spending the night in a resident's room.

55th Street Residence:

SHORT-TERM GUESTS
Provided that there is no unreasonable interference with the rights of a roommate, a resident may have a short-term guest (one whose stay is for a few hours, but not overnight) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. Sunday — Thursday and 8 a.m. — 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
It is the responsibility of the host to meet his/her guest in the lobby and to remain with that person at all times when the guest is in the residence hall. All guests must register at the security desk by signing the registration book and leaving a valid photo ID. The host must also leave their student ID with security. When the guest leaves the hall, he/she must be escorted to the lobby by the host and must sign out in the guest registration book. The ID cards will be returned when the guest leaves the building.
Residents may host a maximum of three short-term guests, not to exceed six per apartment at a time.
Short-term guests must vacate the building by:
12 a.m. Sunday through Thursday
2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

OVERNIGHT GUESTS
Beginning two weeks after the start of classes, and provided that there is no unreasonable interference with the rights of a roommate, a resident may have an overnight guest with permission from his/her suitemates. An overnight guest is one who stays for longer than a few hours and/or sleeps in the room overnight. In the interest of the rights of roommates and other hall residents, there are limits to the duration and frequency of such visits. Overnight guests must follow the same procedures and conditions met by short-term guests as outlined above. In addition, residents must adhere to the following procedures and conditions.
  • A resident may have a single overnight guest for no more than six nights per calendar month, whether the same guest or different guests each night. Residents who are hosting two guests for one night are using two of their allotted six nights (2 guests for 3 nights = six nights).
  • A resident may have an overnight guest for no more than three consecutive nights.
  • A non-resident may not be an overnight guest in the residence halls for more than six nights per calendar month, whether with the same host or with different hosts each night. These six nights may only be used in intervals of three consecutive nights.
  • No apartment may have more than 2 overnight guests on any given night (unless special permission is granted from the RD).
Please be advised that overnight guests are not allowed during orientation, the first week of classes, and finals week.

PROCEDURES for checking guests into their room:

Residents must submit a Guest Request Form 24 hours prior to their guest's arrival. Forms will be available at the residence life office on the second floor of 55th Street Hall (or downloaded and printed from the web), and can only be picked up and returned to the RA on Duty between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. All forms must be submitted 24 hours prior to a guest's arrival.
Request for an overnight guest will be processed immediately upon submittal. The RA on Duty will inform residents whether or not the guest has been approved. Security will be provided with a list of approved guests and will check all guests into the building upon arrival.
All guests will have to leave a valid photo ID at the front desk. It is their responsibility to pick it up upon departure.
Failure to adhere to any of the above procedures will result in requests being denied or future loss of guest privileges.
The Residence Life staff has the right to refuse permission for overnight guests. All policies are subject to change at the discretion of the Department of Residence Life.
